Some people say you don t need to lube an o ring chain but they re missing the point. Don t pressure wash your chain you ll just fire sticky old chain lube everywhere ad you might damage the o rings in the chain. Most modern motorcycle chains are sealed with o rings or x rings some other fancy rubbery ring to keep grease inside the pins. These kinds of heavy duty chains are more expensive than open chains but last much longer and stretch.

Of course the lube eventually dissipates and requires added lubrication but generally offers a longer lasting coating preventing premature wear as you power through mud sand and water which helps explain why the off road crowd prefers the o ring chain. There isn t a chain on the market that doesn t require a small amount of maintenance from time to time. You either have an x z or o ring chain type and it s important to use that information when making a decision.

It stands to reason that non sealed chains found on small capacity bikes need lubricating but is motorcycle chain lube necessary on bigger bikes or is it just a scam to make us spend 15 on a can of grease.
