If the spindle is worn it must be replaced.
My door handle won t turn.
Take the handles knobs off of the door.
Attempt to free the lock button by pushing on it.
Use a tool a flathead screwdriver will work to twist within the gap the thru spindle inserts into.
Flip the key and open the door.
Replace the handle and reinsert and tighten the retaining screws.
Step 3 turn the handle over and if necessary reverse the latch nose.
Place flat head screwdriver in the gap you removed the spindle from.
Twist the screwdriver to see if the mechanism engages properly.
The lock button on the door knob is stuck the solution.
Don t use a wet.
The knob should turn freely.
Take knob handle off the door.
Slide the key in the lock and tap lightly on the key to lubricate the inside of the lock.
Leave the striker bolt in place.
Paint on the edge of the door sometimes prevents the barrel from retracting.
Remove the thru spindle.
To fix the door knob figure out where the connections have gone awry.
Here are the general steps to remove the handle and lock from the door and test the retraction mechanism.
Check to see that the door striker the spring loaded bolt that latches the door pushes in and springs back easily.
See if this retracts the handle.
Remove the two screws one on either side of the handle and remove the knob.
One of the problems that causes this is that the hinges are loose or the house has settled from the freezing and thawing of the ground.
It will come in two pieces.
If this is the problem clean the paint off.
Push on the lock button and hold it in.
If the set screw on the handle is stripped and difficult to tighten replace it with a new one.
Then tighten the screw until you feel it resting against the flat side of the spindle.
Remove the handle by taking out the retaining screws usually two located at the top and bottom of the inside handle.
Remove the handles including the thru spindle.
3 if this does not help remove the knob and check the spindle.
You can fix this problem relocating the hinges or using longer screws.
2 hold the knob on the other side of the door and turn the loose knob clockwise until it fits snugly.
