Moment Frame Pitched Roof

Robin is working on an extension so we thought we d shadow him for the day and see how he creates a pitched roof or semi pitched roof leading up to a flat.

Pitched roof is a type of roof which is provided with some slope as structure covering. Mono the mono roof is a single very low pitched roof used mostly on contemporary homes. We know that the roofs are generally provided at top to cover and protect the structure from different weather conditions. However in practise they tend to be much shallower commonly being expressed as a gradient and can be anywhere from 1 40 to 1 80.

Pitched roofs are generally used where rainfall is heavy. D connections between rafter and column eave joints and splice in the rafter at apex apex joint. To frame this style roof hip trusses are utilized from the main peak of the building stepping down with a flat top chord. The anatomy of a steel portal frame can be broken down into four key in plane components.

A hip set is then used to frame the 6 or 8 feet nearest the end wall. It uses a single mono truss 1 and often has a pitch lower than 3 inches per foot 2 making it easy to roof but hard to maintain. In this design each side of the building has a roof pitch and eave. The pitch of a roof is its vertical rise divided by its horizontal span and is a measure of its steepness.

The roof pitch is typically set to 5 10º with portalised bays at 6 8m centres longitudinally. A pitched roof is in contrast to a flat roof which technically is any roof with a slope less than 10.
